Essential Pieces of America's StoryIn the May editions of the eNews, the Co-op's Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee recognizes the contributions of Asian Americans as part of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Hawaii's Last and Only QueenQueen Liliuokalani (1838-1917) was the first, last and only female monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom; she reigned from 1891 to 1893. She was Black, fluent in English and wrote over 150 songs, including Hawaii’s iconic, “Aloha Oe” ("Farewell to Thee"). In 1893, a clandestine group of U.S. and European businessmen, with the help of the Marines, orchestrated a victorious coup d’etat, which led to the United States annexing Hawaii. Lilliuokalani lived under house arrest for 24 years. In 1898, she wrote "Hawaii's Story," a song that chronicled the monarchy's overthrow. This video recounts the overthrow of Hawaii.
